Since its founding in 2010, NMCTR has been looking for a Forever Home where the horses could live in a healthy natural herd, free to roam and graze when they aren’t working helping their humans. In early 2023, we found it in Stanley, NM, just 20 minutes south of Eldorado off of New Mexico Highway 41. While the horses have been busy eating and running free in their temporary quarters down the road from the New Home, the humans have been busy planning the new facilities and working on getting the necessary Santa Fe County permits. The horses are healthier and happier than they’ve ever been. The humans are hopeful that the County permits will be issued soon. And everyone – humans and horses – is eager to start working again, offering our unique equine-facilitated services to a wider community.

NMCTR’s New Home is located on a 50-acre parcel of land at the corner of NM Highway 41 and Simmons Road (Santa Fe County Road 26). And we will have access to another 100 adjoining acres for activities such as grazing and trail riding.

The plans for the new facility include an oval driveway opening off Simmons Road. With parking for clients and volunteers, it allows entering and exiting without the need to back up.

In the first phase, lessons will be held in an outdoor arena with a viewing area with bleacher seating. There will also be a round pen for more specialized lessons and training. The horses will continue to live outside in a herd, in fenced turnouts. They will also have access to two 3-sided shelters to get out of the weather if they want to (they usually don’t want to!).

The second phase plans include an indoor arena with stalls for the horses; a tack room for equipment; and viewing, meeting, and office space for the humans.

As soon as the County permits are in hand, we will be able to complete the first phase and get lessons started again.

The Capital Campaign to raise funds to build the indoor arena continues. We need your help – just click the “Donate” button below. All of us – horses and humans – thank you and look forward to welcoming you at our New Home.
