October 2, 2018 –

New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding was awarded an $84,000 grant from The City of Santa Fe Children and Youth Commission. The Children and Youth Commission promotes the healthy development of children and youth in a community environment in which the strengths of young people are recognized and nurtured with a mission to improve the lives of children by supporting local nonprofit and school programs that work for kids. The Commission receives three percent (3%) of the gross receipts tax and administers funding to local nonprofits on a two-year funding cycle at approximately $1.2 million annually (funding amount varies due to GRT fluctuations).  The purpose of the fund is to support community programs that promote the healthy development of children and youth, ages birth to twenty-one (21).

The monies that will be granted over the two year grant cycle (2018-2019 and 2019-2020) will be used to enhance and maintain NMCTR’s children and youth programs. NMCTR offers two unique children and youth programs that use the horse as the primary tool to increase protective factors and reduce risk factors associated with an increased likelihood of negative life outcomes (depression, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, dropping out of school, delinquency, and unmet mental health needs) that can lead to suicide attempts. These innovative, research-based programs are: 1) The School Outreach Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program for under-served, low-income students with disabilities (including developmental delay, Down Syndrome, ADHD, hearing loss, cerebral palsy, TBI, autism, etc.) from participating Santa Fe schools and 2) The Self-Mastery Equine-Assisted Learning Program for at-risk youth (ages 11-18) referred by local agencies (The Suicide Prevention Project, Santa Fe Youth Shelters, Juvenile Detention Programs).

Thank you, City of Santa Fe Children and Youth Commission, for your continued support of our work in the community! We look forward to changing lives one stride at a time!
