February 2, 2022 –
In the Equine-Assisted Activities industry, volunteers are very crucial to the success of each center. Each month, we will be choosing a volunteer of the month. For January 2022, the volunteer of the month is Margaret Chavez. Margaret has gone over and above this month by picking up extra horse feeding shift (she did a total of 20 shifts), offered to pick up more shifts during the recent snowstorm, and made brand new tack up schedule boards for the lessons.
Margaret was born in Las Cruces and raised in Santa Fe. She has a BA in Liberal Arts from the University of Michigan. After working for the federal government for 35 years in Santa Fe, Washington DC, and Santa Ana California, Margaret retired and lives in Rancho Viejo with her husband Jim and yellow lab Koda. During her stint with the government, she was deeply involved in serving economically disadvantaged and underrepresented gifted children, especially those with limited English-speaking abilities. Her volunteer interests have included working in at-risk schools and community centers with children and adults who are learning to read, write and speak English. Margaret is an avid walker and hiker. Since her retirement in 2013, Margaret has walked portions of the 500-mile pilgrimage of the Camino de Santiago in Spain several times over the years, and she is currently training to walk it again.
Thank you for everything Margaret for everything you do for NMCTR! We appreciate you!
