Dana and Kodi

April 12, 2022 –

April 11th, 2022 was bittersweet as we retired our Mustang “Kodi”. He was adopted by long time volunteer, Dana!

Kodi came to NMCTR 7 years ago looking for a purpose. Over the years, he was a great horse for children with autism and for volunteers that wanted to learn natural horsemanship. We made the decision to retire him from a riding horse a few years ago when he let us know he was no longer interested in that aspect of the program. What he enjoyed the most was connecting with our at-risk teen participants. As a young boy, Kodi was separated from his mom and experienced abusive behavior. Even with his past, he chose to trust and continue to learn and grow. This amazing quality is something that encouraged his at-risk teens to try to do the same. He provided hope for them.

Dana fell in love with Kodi many years ago. She always gave him extra love and connected with him. He trusts her. He looks for her to arrive. After deciding it was time to fully retire Kodi, Dana knew this was her opportunity to follow her dreams of becoming a horse owner.

We were sad to see our witty mustang leave but very happy for Dana! This is a win-win for everyone involved!
